How to Check Your Attorney’s License

Attorneys are licensed by state bar associations, and can be licensed in more than one state. This article will explain simple steps you can take to verify that your attorney is properly licensed.

Attorneys do not necessarily have to be licensed in your state in order to represent you, although some restrictions do apply. If you are considering hiring an attorney that is not licensed in your state, you should discuss any restrictions that might affect the lawyer’s ability to represent you.

Generally, state bar associations maintain websites where you can search for your attorney and confirm that your attorney is licensed and in good standing. The websites may also have other relevant information, such as:

  • Any prior disciplinary actions against the attorney
  • Attorney certifications
  • The date the attorney obtained his or her license
  • The university and law school the attorney attended
  • If you have any questions about the information you find discuss them with the attorney prior to hiring him or her.

When you search for an attorney you may find that more than one attorney in your state has the same name. Make sure you are checking the records for the correct attorney.
